Helping parents teach reading at home, one sound at a time

We Love Phonics helps parents and caregivers teach their kids to read at home, a few minutes at a time: what to teach, in what order, and what to say.

Why this site exists

The guide we wish we’d had

Most parents are never shown how reading is taught. Then a school report mentions “phonics” and “blending”, a teacher asks you to practice sounds at home, and you are left searching for what any of it means.

We Love Phonics answers that: what to teach, in what order, what to say, and a short activity you can do with what is already in the house.

What we left out

  • Jargon
  • Expensive kit
  • Hour-long sessions

What’s left: ten calm minutes and things you already have.

How we teach

What we believe

  • Sounds before namesChildren read with the sound a letter makes, so that is what we teach first.
  • Little and oftenTen calm minutes most days does more than a long session once a week.
  • Decodable first, then everythingEarly practice uses words a child can sound out. Story time, read by you, can be any book at all.
  • Stop while it’s funA child who asks for “one more” will come back tomorrow.

An honest note

Who this isn’t for

We are a website of guides, not a school, and we can’t assess your child.

If you are worried about your child’s speech, hearing, or how they are learning, talk to their teacher, your pediatrician, or a qualified specialist. Our guides can sit alongside that advice, not replace it.
